Using my blog to try and make the world a better place. If I can help someone forget their troubles for a few minutes a day, it's all worth it.

I'm living on the air in Cincinnati, Cincinnati WKRP

I loved this show. Nobody else I know did. Well that's fine. They're wrong. This was quality programming, baby! I think it debuted around 1978, at the height of the disco era. I loved the part when Venus Flytrap (the black guy) was applying for a job, and Loni Anderson, the secretary, asked: "Are you Earth, Wind, Or Fire???" haha, that cracked me up!

Good day sunshine, hello skin cancer:

In the 70's, getting a tan was very important. Some people even used baby oil to "speed up the process"..

Memories may be beautiful, and yet, what's too painful to remember we simply choose to forget:

Electro Woman and Dyna Girl - a case in point that the good old days weren't always good.

Not doing anything Saturday night??? Maybe it's not him. Maybe it's YOU:

I found the above pic when I did an image search for "hygiene films". If your date life's in the slumps, click pic for a larger image. It's just so full of helpful info. I realize it's not from the 70's, but hey it's my blog (c: .....

Time for Timer:

These little cartoon segments usually aired during commercial breaks for the ABC Afternoon Specials, as well as on Saturday mornings. They were informational cartoons, that taught us how to eat healthy "I hanker for a hunk of cheese", and "Make a Wagon Wheel" (some sort of round sandwich). He looks kind of creepy in the above pic, but it's just a bad shot. He really wasn't that bad, I swear ;^)

Sid and Marty:

The decade wouldn't have been the same without them.

Old cereal boxes:

Pictured are some cereal box photos I came across. I remember some of them, although I think most of them were from the 60's, not the 70's. Actually the main reason I chose to post them was because the previous post's pic was so disturbing, I didn't want it to be the first pic on my site....

The Macrame Owls Fad:

Thank goodness it's over...

I'm going to miss him:

"Dan Seals, who enjoyed successful careers in both pop and country music for more than three decades, died Wednesday. He was 61 years old.

Seals battled mantle cell lymphoma, and according to sources had recently undergone an experimental stem cell transplant at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. He died at his home in Nashville, while under hospice care.

Born in McCamey, Texas, Dan Seals was the brother of Jim Seals, of the hit pop duo Seals and Crofts. The younger Seals soon followed in his brother's footsteps, forming a singing partnership with John Ford Coley. The duo scored a number of hit singles on the pop chart throughout the '70s as England Dan and John Ford Coley, including the No. 2 hit, 'I'd Really Love to See You Tonight,' and a Top 10 cover of Todd Rundgren's 'Love Is the Answer.'

In 1980, Seals signed as a solo country-pop artist with Atlantic Records, and in 1983, turned his attention solely to country music, signing with Nashville's Liberty/Capitol label. In 1984, he began an impressive streak of 16 Top 10 country hits, starting with 'God Must Be a Cowboy.' In 1985, he scored the first of 11 No. 1 country songs, with 'Meet Me in Montana,' a duet with Marie Osmond. Other chart-topping hits included 'Addicted,' 'You Still Move Me' and the pop crossover hit, 'Bop,' which was the CMA's Single of the Year in 1986."

What was I THINKing???!!?

When I was about 6, I thought I'd try cutting my own hair. What made it worse is when my parents laughed at me... haha. Well, at least Calvin had Hobbes to blame. An old friend of mine cut hers too.
She had 2 long pigtails.
She cut off one.
She also shaved one eyebrow off...

Haskell's Ice Cream Hut:

This is the set of Haskell's Ice Cream Hut, where we found out that Jan was a better worker than Marcia. According to Mr. Haskell: "Marcia, you're a great worker..... but Jan here is a little bit better". Ouch!

The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show:

"Hey Rocky! Watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat!"
I was more of a Rocky and Bullwinkle fan than an Underdog Show fan (although I did like both), I just liked The Rocky show better. I loved the Fractured Fairy Tales, and The Wayback Machine. No offense to any Underdog fans out there.... ;^)

Digital watches:

Kimo sent me this pic of this digital watch. He still has it, and it still works. When digital watches first came out, they were ground-breaking. No one had ever seen one before, they were a new innovation. They were also extremely expensive. A really good digital watch would cost in the 100's of dollars. I'm not sure if they make them anymore.

Mom always SAID: "Don't play ball in the house"...

Like I posted before, I always found it odd that on tv shows, the interiors of the houses always stay the same. No new pictures, the furniture doesn't get re-arranged, no new carpeting, etc. Well, now I know why. Carol Brady moves that stupid horse sculpture ONE time, and her vase gets broken. She and Mike re-wallpaper their bedroom, and Alice "accidentally" steps in a tray of wallpaper paste. Yes, I guess that's just bad luck, changing the interiors. Go figure...

And now a word from our sponsor:

I'd like to build the world a home
and furnish it with love,
grow apple trees
and honey bees
and snow-white turtle doves.
I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony,
I'd like to buythe world a coke
and keep it company.

1975 Saturday morning TV:

Back then, Saturday morning cartoons were a staple for just about every kid. The only one on the above list I watched was Land Of The Lost. I was watching The Bugs Bunny / Road Runner Show and a couple of others during the times the above cartoons aired. I'm not sure if anybody remembers "Westwind" (myself included), because by 11:30 my parents usually made me shut off the tv and get on with the day.. I can still hear my folks: "WHAT ARE YOU DOING STILL WATCHING TV????? GET OUTSIDE!!!!!!" Hahaa.

I have a photograph - preserved your memories. They're all that's left you...

These pics were developed in March of 1970. They could've been taken in December of '69, but I can't say for sure... I still remember the coat, and the fasteners on the front. Mom loved to dress me up as a kid. She was the best mom ever.

Run Joey Run, quite possibly the worst song of the decade.

"I got in my car and I drove like mad, till I reached Julie's place. She ran to me, with tears in her eyes, and bruises on her face. All at once, I saw him there, sneaking up behind me, WATCH OUT! Then Julie yelled, he's got a gun! and she stepped in front of me. Suddenly, a shot rang out, and I saw Julie fallingI ran to her, I held her close, when I looked down, my hands were red, and heres the last words Julie said...
Daddy please don't, it wasn't his fault, he means so much to meDaddy please don't, we're gonna get married.....aaahhh..ahhhhahhhh....ahhhhh"

I had no idea how bad this song was back then. Some kids used to tease me because my name back then was Joey. When we played tag they'd sing it to tease me... haha.

Random find:

I'd love to know what she's telling him, but since I've heard him sing, I'm pretty sure she's advising him that he "better find another career to fall back on, just in case"...

Mister Green Jeans - The neighbor who just wouldn't go home:

Sorry, they don't look like jeans to me. More like Dickies work pants. Maybe I'm being picky, but I'm just that way..

Mutual of Omaha is people you can "count on" when the going's tough:

If you watched any TV in the early 70's, you probably remember Marlin Perkins and Mutual Of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. It was a revolutionary program, the first of its kind. While I was too young to remember any one show in particular, I do remember it being an excellent show. I'm not sure if they show repeats on TV anymore, which surprises me. Alot of people watched it.

Bigfoot... I'm still not sure what that dude is supposed to be:

Film Father got me thinking about the huge Bigfoot craze that happened around 1975/76. It was insane. What WAS bigfoot??? I never really knew. Also, I never had the above action figure, though. I had Maskatron, who could kick Bigfoot's butt any day. ;^)
One of these days I will buy a Maskatron NRFB on ebay, after I get over the $175 sticker shock.... those things aren't cheap...

King Vitaman cereal:

I'd get this cereal from time to time. I had the prize, btw. I still remember it. It didn't run too well on our shag carpet, though. On a side-note, is this guy disturbing looking or what??

Random fact:

I was a latch key kid. I'd come home alone and mom would leave the house key under the front doormat. I'd let myself in, then I'd call mom at work and tell her I was home and then watch tv and wait for my parents to come home from work. I was also 7 years old. I think today my folks would be thrown in jail if they did that, but the thing is I liked it. I really did. It was never a hardship for me. That's just the way it was.
I don't know of many 7-year-old's who could be trusted like that.

Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids. In fact it's cold as hell. And there's no one there to raise them, if you did.

Thank goodness Marvin the Martian kept forgetting that Illudium PU-36 Explosive Space Modulator, otherwise I'm afraid we'd have been wiped out long ago...

In my not-so-humble opinion:

Shelley Long made an excellent Carol Brady in the movie versions of The Brady Bunch. She and Christine Taylor were spot-on as Carol and Marcia, but to me the others just didn't look much like the original cast members. It's like those in charge of casting didn't even try... Gary Cole as Mike???? Looked nothing like him.

Quite possibly THE worst movie of 1978:

Okay, definitely the worst movie of 1978. Well, that and Jaws II. To this day I haven't come across anybody who thinks otherwise. I believe the bottom pic is the cast at the movie preview, when they all realized what a crappy movie they just spent months making, nailing the coffin on any future movie prospects they may have had...

The Lemon Twist:

I had one of these in 1975.
Okay, so I had two....

Studio 54:

Between you and me, I'm amazed that anyone who went to Studio 54 back in "the day" lived this long to tell about it. They partied hard back then....

Lady Elaine Fairchilde:

I once had a nightmare about this puppet. I was about 6 years old, and I dreamed mom and I were walking by a house with a raised basement, and she (the puppet) grabbed me by my pant leg as I walked by, and tried to drag me through the basement window which was street level. She had my leg and mom had my arm and they were both pulling on me and I was screaming. I'll never forget it.
She still kind of 'weirds me out'...

Stocking Stuffers:

Every year, mom sends me my Christmas gifts in the mail. She also includes a bunch of "stocking stuffers". She puts alot of time and thought into her packages, but I don't have the heart to tell her that all those stuffers end up in my drawer, unused. I've got electric toothbrushes, fabric softeners, deodorants, Chap Stick (not the real Chap Stick, but the generic cheap-o crap), etc. All in my drawer.... Pictured are about three years of stuff that I haven't and probably will never use.

Damn that 'Wedge"...

It seems like in 1976/77, every chick was getting a Dorothy Hamill hairstyle (a.k.a. the wedge).
Even those who really shouldn't have..

Behold: The Bucket...

I don't know if you can still buy Dunkin' Donuts Munchkins in a bucket, but back in the early 70's you could. I guess they figured if the bucket worked for Colonel Sanders, it was a sure thing. Too bad it was so damn ugly....

One of my top ten fave 70's singers:

I saw on a documentary that Donna Summer was a Preacher's daughter. I'm sure when he saw this album cover he was just thrilled...

Saturday, March 07, 2009

I found myself thinking of Dynamints today because of a post from another blog. Damn I miss these babies....

THE Farrah Fawcett poster:

In 1976/77, this poster was everywhere. Except my room (to be honest, her teeth kind of scared me... okay, they frightened the hell out of me)..

"You're soaking in it."

I haven't come across many people who watched any television whatsoever between 1970 and 1980, that don't remember Madge the manicurist, the spokeswoman for Palmolive dish washing detergent.

1976

Cheap eats:

When mom and dad split up in '76, mom got custody. All of a sudden she was raising a kid on one income and money was tight. For a couple of years we ate at McDonald's almost 3 nights a week. Looking at the prices in the above ad, it's no wonder. Where else could you feed a kid for less than 2 bucks?

Really cheap advice:

Some people you just aren't going to be able to win over, no matter what. Hey, it happens..

There was nothing like starting the new school year with a brand new lunchbox. Why "there was nothing like starting the new school year with a brand new lunchbox" I can't really say..
